As long as 3,000-6,000 years ago, Egyptians described the use of plants as medicinal agents. 2,500 years ago, Hippocrates-the Greek physician known as “the father of medicine” recognized the importance of good nutrition when he said: “Let thy food be the medicine and thy medicine be thy food”. In the 1800s the term pharmacognosy was used to refer to the study of plants, minerals, etc. In the late 20th century, the U.S. population became more dissatisfied with Western medicine, and the use of nontraditional therapies increased.

It is a leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Effective treatments exist that can increase the rates of long-term abstinence. A national network of tobacco quit support is available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. The combination of counseling and medication is more effective than either one alone.

Weight Management

-Measuring BMI (body mass index) and Waist Circumstance

Overweight individuals have a higher risk of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, stroke, respiratory dysfunction, gout, osteoarthritis, certain cancers, and premature death. Body fat can be monitored using the body mass index (BMI). Waist circumference is a good indicator of abdominal fat, which is a predictor of risk for developing heart disease. Modest weight loss is beneficial. Reduction of further weight gain is important. Appropriate nutritional regimens are required, and exercise is an important component of weight management.
